A rose by any other name...
Gabrielle. Gabby. GG. Elle. Grace. Booga Wooga. Jasonella. Juliet was asking the right question - What's in a name? I only wish it were really that simple.
About two weeks ago, I learned that Eva Longoria's character on Desperate Housewives is named Gabby. Or Gabrielle. Whatever. I have to say that I am somewhat upset about this discovery. Not only have I been hearing reports of tons of little kids named Gabrielle or Gabriel, now people will think we named her after some shallow character on a nighttime soap opera. Not exactly the unique sophistication we were going for. That's what I get for not keeping up with the Joneses on Wisteria Lane. Well, now you know. She's not named after Eva Longoria. Although, I think Eva is a pretty cool name, too. Ha. We should name our next daughter Eva. At least everyone could pronounce it.
Gabrielle has a short a sound - like 'apple.' When you use a long a sound - like 'ape' - you are turning it into the male form of the name. Every time someone stumbles over her name, I think, "One more vote for Elle." Nanna and Natalie are gung-ho for Elle as her permanent name. Jason only likes it when he uses it - he doesn't like to hear other people say it. I guess the pot doesn't want the kettle to call ... Never mind.

I can't tell if that's a teddy bear or a bulldog on her head -- but I think it's my new favorite pic. Make me a 4x6 for my desk, please.
ReplyDeleteIn another year or so (after Desperate Housewives has run out of 'steam' and the show ends), no one will remember or care that you named your baby after one of the show's trampy characters. Really. You'll be the only one that knows, and if you quit documenting it on these blogs, it'll fade like a M.J. jumper in the paint.
7:00 tonight - ACC tourney, UNC vs. Virgina. Steaks will be done by 6:30 -- don't be late!
I L-O-V-E your blog. Thanks for keeping me updated on Gabrielle news :) Luv, Cintia :)
